Skills-Based Medical Training for Remote Environments

Wilderness medicine training in the field

Wasatch Wilderness Medicine brings field-tested, NOLS-certified training to groups across the Mountain West. We focus on practical skills, critical decision-making, and leadership for remote environments.

We partner with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), who uses a data-informed curriculum to prevent, recognize, and treat injuries and illnesses in resource limited environments.

Courses are designed for all levels of experience including novice recreationalists, industry experts, and professional organizations needing skills and certifications.

Dan Varick

Dan has worked professionally in the outdoor industry since 2012 and has worked with NOLS Wilderness Medicine since 2020. As an instructor and guide, Dan has led expeditions to the Brooks Range of Alaska, whitewater canoe trips in the Arctic, study abroad semesters to the Peruvian Amazon, and university courses winter camping in Utah's Uinta Mountains.

Dan began his career in medicine in 2019 as an EMT working on an ambulance. Working in both rural and urban environments, he provided care and transportation for sick and injured patients. With a background in pre-hospital ambulance care and experience leading educational wilderness expeditions, Dan knows the importance of good instruction, critical decision-making and leadership in remote environments.

Dan has called the Wasatch home since 2021. He currently works as a senior instructor for NOLS and as adjunct faculty for the University of Utah's Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department. As the founder and lead instructor of Wasatch Wilderness Medicine, he's excited to bring his expertise to the classroom and beyond.
